The Medical City celebrated the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March with a lay forum entitled “All You Need to Know About Colorectal Cancer” held at the Augusto Barcelon Auditorium.
Congresswoman Angelina “Helen” Tan, M.D., Chairman of the Committee on Health of The House of Representatives, served as the keynote speaker and she talked about the recently signed Universal Health Law and Integrated Cancer Control Law.
The Universal Health Care Law paves the way for the institutionalization of a people-centered health service that provides Filipinos the health services they need without suffering financial hardship. The second law scales up essential programs by covering prevention of cancer, screening, accurate diagnosis, and treatment.
The lectures in the forum were the following: Colorectal Cancer Screening: Beating Colorectal Cancer: Why We Need to Screen by gastroenterologist Dr. Jun Ruiz; Surgical Management by Dr. Carlo Cajucom; and Holistic Oncology by Dr. Josephine Contreras-Tolentino. The message remains that colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable.
The forum was preceded by a press conference where the current medical and surgical services at The Medical City, including the Z package for treatment for colorectal cancer, were presented to members of the media.
The Colorectal Clinic of The Medical City under the leadership of Dr. Manuel Francisco T. Roxas has been one of the pioneers and leading advocates of colorectal cancer screening. This year’s awareness campaign at the institution was organized by gastroenterologist Dr. Jun Ruiz.
The Medical City advocates aim to be at the forefront in the battle against colorectal cancer – the third most common cancer in the country – as it promotes this advocacy in its network of hospitals and clinics throughout the country, and beyond. Gel Dumaraos
